Las Vegas City Guide
A popular destination for singles, couples, and families, Las Vegas continues to grow, in size and in grandeur. More than 35 million tourists wager millions of dollars every year in this brightly lit desert city. Once a quiet village founded by Mormon missionaries, Las Vegas changed forever when gambling became legal in the 1930s. The allure of the famous Las Vegas strip, combined with outlying natural attractions such as Lake Mead and the surrounding desert , make this point in the southern tip of Nevada a popular destination for many. Whether you stay for a weekend, a week or even a month, you’ll never be at a lack for something to do, any hour of the day, any day of the week.
Obviously, casinos are the main attraction in Las Vegas, and gamblers will not be disappointed with the number and variety of venues. Some are old, some are new, some feature rides and some feature shows. Heck, one even features live white tigers in its lobby, but they all cater to the gambler above anything else.
If you’re visiting Vegas strictly to gamble, suit yourself, but remember that attractions also abound outside casino walls. Just taking a walk down Las Vegas Boulevard is a sensory overload. Flashing neon signs beckon visitors from every angle and the smells of an array of concessions and restaurants fill the air. A variety of motion-simulator rides can be found at Caesar’s and Excalibur hotels as well as many other spots. For those who want their action a little more real, roller coasters pepper the city. Riders on the Manhattan Express experience negative g’s, while riders on the Stratosphere’s High Roller are eye level with helicopters flying by. Circus Circus hotel features a double loop, double corkscrew coaster, and the coaster at Sahara takes riders 25 feet below ground and reaches speeds up to 70 mph.
If you get dizzy just thinking about the rides, maybe museums are more your speed. Vegas has a variety of museums that feature camera-ready wax figures; Elvis memorabilia galore; antique, classic and foreign automobiles; Nevada history; Liberace’s sparkling collection of jewels, pianos and clothing; movie and clown paraphernalia and much more.
Some of the best entertainment in Vegas is free and easy to find. As you make your way down the Strip, you simply must stop and watch the spectacular Bellagio fountains that shoot water 250 feet into the air in tune with classic and modern music. On down the way, the Volcano at the Mirage is always fun to watch as it explodes and ignites fires in the surrounding lagoon.
There are lots of activities to experience in Vegas including taking a gondola ride, touring a botanical garden, viewing flamingos, penguins, sharks and white tigers, experiencing Star Trek, and even visiting Egypt! An array of shops are in and around Vegas - both outlet and top-of-the-line malls. You can watch a show, listen to live music, and the list goes on.
If the glitzy world of the Vegas strip isn’t your thing, just outside of the city you’ll find Red Rock Canyon and Hoover Dam. These attractions are well worth visiting, as they exhibit both natural and man-made wonders. Nearby, two and three hundred-year-old Joshua trees can be spotted in addition to the wild burros and cacti that are native to this desert area.
Whether it’s bright lights and gambling you want, or the tranquil recreation areas of the desert, you’ll find it all in southern Nevada.
